Breast Implant Revision
Understanding Implant Revisions
Breast implant revision is when your old breast implants get replaced with new ones. Clients may seek out this service if they want to update their implant material while improving the appearance of their breasts at the same time.
Reasons to Consider Breast Implant Revision
Some changes you could seek out when you get your revision could be to increase or decrease the size of your implants or have them reshaped or repositioned. Sometimes clients find that they want a more “natural” appearance to their breasts or to give them a little lift if they’re starting to sag.
Why Implants May Sag
You may not think that breast implants could sag, but anything that changes the tissue or skin around your implants can have an impact on the implants themselves. If you lose weight, the extra fat in your breasts may not be there to support the implants the way it used to.
As we age, breasts naturally tend to sag, and it can cause the implants to sag as well. Very large implants may even weigh down or flatten your breasts over time. During an implant revision, these concerns can be addressed so your implant can be looking its best again.
While seeking out a revision for cosmetic concerns is common, there are other reasons to consider one. Some clients find that the implant size they originally wanted turned out to be too large for their long-term comfort. Others want to change the material of their implants altogether, or don’t like the way their overlying breast tissue has healed over the implant.
Regardless of the reason, if you’re not as happy with your implants as you used to be, it may be time to consider a breast implant revision. Our team would be happy to go over what you want from your implant revision. Our job is to help you feel your best, and we can work together with you to help pick a style and material that has the best chance of helping you reach your goals.
How It Works
Since there can be so many different reasons a client seeks out a revision, this surgery tends to be very personalized. Our team will be putting our care and experience to work by not only working with the natural shape of your body but also implementing the newest techniques to deliver the best results possible.
Who Can Be a Candidate?
Anyone who has gotten a breast implant and isn’t as happy with their results is welcome to come in for a consultation. Whether you want to change the size, appearance, shape, or feel of your breasts, our team can discuss your options with you. You may also want to consider this surgery if you have concerns about the condition of your implants.
If You Have Scar Tissue, It May Be Able to Help
These revisions can either replace your current implants or make some adjustments to help improve the silhouette. Another potential candidate for a revision would be someone with an inflamed or hardened capsule. When you get a breast implant, it’s very common for a soft layer of scar tissue to form around the implant. This scar tissue rarely causes an issue and shouldn’t even be noticeable.
However, in the rare case that this “capsule” of tissue gets inflamed, it can cause discomfort or alter the breast’s shape. A revision can help correct this issue. When you come in to visit us, we’ll take a look at your concerns and let you know if this surgery may be a good fit for your needs.
Should Breast Implants Be Replaced or Adjusted Regularly?
The short answer to this is – it depends. If you have a silicone implant it’s currently recommended that you get an MRI three years after your surgery, then every two years after that so any sign of rupture can be spotted. Breast implants are usually replaced every decade, but the time can be flexible depending on your needs.
Some patients find that they’re still happy with their results at 10 years and don’t want or need a replacement. Others find that they want an adjustment sooner. Each body is different, which means the timeline is going to be different based on how your body responds to your implant and whether you continue to be happy with the appearance of your breasts over time.
What to Expect From a Consultation
During a consultation, we’ll be asking you questions, but you’re welcome and encouraged to bring your own questions to ask us as well! Some clients like to bring a written list of questions they have. This is an especially good idea if you expect to be nervous or excited. Having a list so you aren’t afraid of forgetting what you wanted to ask can offer some peace of mind.
Some of the things we’ll want to know may include:
- Any medical conditions you have
- What results you’re looking for
- Any medication, herbal supplements, or vitamins you take
- What you’re allergic to
- Your previous treatment and surgical history
This isn’t a complete list, but it covers some of what you can expect to be asked when you come in to visit us.
During a physical examination, you can show us any areas of concern you have when it comes to your breasts. We’ll do our best to determine what state your implants are in, as well as the health of your skin and breast tissue.
