Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. It targets stubborn fat deposits that remain even after maintaining a healthy weight. Liposuction surgery aims to enhance body contours, giving individuals a balanced and proportionate appearance. It can help people achieve the toned look they desire when other efforts have fallen short.
Liposuction involves removing localized fat cells using a thin instrument called a cannula. This cannula is connected to a vacuum device that effectively suctions out the fat. Common areas treated include the abdomen, thighs, flanks, and neck. These regions often have fat that is difficult to reduce through exercise alone, making liposuction an effective solution.
Ideal candidates are those who maintain a healthy weight but struggle with certain fat deposits. Both men and women with good skin elasticity can benefit. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. If weight reduction or pregnancy is planned, consider postponing the procedure for the best outcome.
There are different types of liposuction to suit individual needs:
Liposuction is often included as part of a Mommy Makeover to restore body shape after pregnancy. Common areas treated include the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms. Combining liposuction with other procedures helps address changes in the body that occur after childbirth. To learn more, please visit our Mommy Makeover section.
Recovery after liposuction is generally manageable, with some swelling and bruising expected. Patients are usually given pain relief to stay comfortable during recovery. Wearing a compression garment helps reduce swelling and encourages better skin contraction. Most patients can return to work within a few days and resume physical activities in a few weeks.
Liposuction removes deep fat layers but does not directly treat cellulite. Cellulite appears due to the interaction between connective tissue and fat under the skin. While liposuction can improve body contour and reduce fat volume, it does not eliminate cellulite. However, it may lessen its appearance in some cases.
